Waltham Abbey 6 Ware 1

THE FA Cup traditionally brings a touch of magic, but for Ware it was all smoke and no mirrors as they turned in a one-dimensional performance to crash out of the competition at the Preliminary Round stage.

The visitors were torn apart by the fast-moving hosts, whose performance was symbolised by the acrobatic over-head kick from Tim Shaw that completed the scoring late in the game.

Boss Stuart Nethercott made two changes to the side that secured an encouraging draw with Cheshunt five days previously, with Jimmy Martin coming in on the right wing and goalkeeper Bert Greenwood wearing the gloves.

Abbey’s Steve Cawley tested the former Bishop’s Stortford custodian with a third minute shot, while at the other end, a menacing ball into the box by Leigh Rose forced Jack Daveney to head over his own bar under pressure from Martin.

Abbey almost took the lead on 16 minutes when Shaw turned his man on the edge of the box and hit the far post with Greenwood at full stretch.

But four minutes later the deadlock was broken when Dan Harvey picked out Louis Bristow on the left side of the box, the latter composing himself before firing past the keeper.

Greenwood made a superb double save shortly afterwards, before a rasping shot from Cawley smacked the woodwork from 20 yards.

The Abbotts doubled their lead on 37 minutes when Luke Webster swept the ball home after Bristow had comfortably shrugged off Martin out wide and sent in a cross.

Five minutes before the break, the Abbotts effectively sealed the game when Liam Thomas netted with a free header after Bristow’s corner.

Ware made a double change at half-time with Shane Branch-Gilkes replacing Jon Stevenson in the middle of the park and Ben Andreos taking Ricci Crace’s place up front.

Jack Friend was given the captain’s armband in Stevenson’s absence.

But there was more woe for the visitors on 63 minutes when Abbey substitute Ayrton Coley fired in from inside the box.

Ware pulled a goal back five minutes later when Andreos beat onrushing Abbey keeper Harry Ricketts to a through ball and slotted it into the unguarded net.

However, there was to be no comeback on the cards as substitute Craig Charles set up Coley to fire in his second and Abbey’s fifth from outside the area on 72 minutes.

With a quarter of an hour left, Coley got the better of Vince Rispoli and sent Shaw through one-on-one with Greenwood, but the goalkeeper came out and smothered the ball just inside his area.

The scoring was completed with the goal of the game 11 minutes from time.

After Shaw had lobbed Greenwood, Jack Friend retreated to head the ball out, but Shaw caught sight of the rebound and acrobatically turned and sent a sublime over-head kick over both defender and goalkeeper and into the net.
